How to Grade PDF Types of Assignments

Updated June 30th, 2026

PDF types of assignments include Study Guides, Graphic Organizers, Map Skills, and more!

When digitally assigned, students can complete the activity directly within the GO Platform by using the Annotation Tools in the toolbar on the right. And when the assignment is submitted by the student, teachers can view the annotations and score the assignment on the Grading or Selected Student tab of the Grading Screen.

Accessing PDF Assignments for Grading

Teachers can access their PDF assignments for grading from several areas within the Gallopade Online Platform including the Needs Grading Widget, Assignments Due Widget, Assignment tab, and Gradebook.

Assignment Information

At the top of the Grade By Student and Grade By Question screen, teachers will find the assignment details including how many students were assigned the resource, how many have submitted, and the assignment start and due date/time.

In this area, teachers can also view the correlated standards by selecting the book icon   and view the resource description, instructional strategies, and when to use information by selecting the i icon .

Summary Tab

The Summary tab provides the status, original and final score (displayed as points or percentage), and an item analysis of all questions included in the assignment.

At the top of the Summary tab, teachers will find the Assignment Summary.  This provides data on how many students were assigned the resource, how many have been graded, the lowest and highest scores, and how many total possible points / percentage  the assignment was worth.

Table Options

  • View: Scores can be viewed with the flexibility to toggle between two formats: percentage and points.
    • Percentage (%): This is the default setting, showcasing both the final and original scores in percentage format.
    • Points: Displays the final and original scores as raw point values.
  • Print button: Enables users to print the report.

Assignment Summary Status

Immediately following the Table Options, teachers will find a list of students who have been assigned the resource.

For each student, teachers will be able to view the submit date & time, status, and scores (points / percentage) earned.

Final Score and Original Score will be displayed as “-” if the student has not started the assignment.

The All Students column can be sorted alphabetically by either first or last name by clicking on the sort icon. Additional columns, including status and final grades, are also sortable to help teachers organize student information efficiently.

Submit Date and Time

When a student submits the assignment, the date and time submitted will appear under the student's name.

Selecting a student's name will direct the teacher to the Grade By Question screen displaying the questions students have answered.

Status

These may include Not Assigned, Not Started, Started, Submitted, and Graded.

Scores

The Original Score and Final Score both reflect points / percentage earned. When the assignment is marked graded, the Gradebook will reflect both points earned and percentage.

The Original Score is populated when teachers score the submission by entering the amount of points earned by the student on the Grading or Selected Student tabs.

The Final Score cell allows teachers to adjust the student's final score without editing the original score.  If no final score is entered, the original score will populate in the Final Score cell automatically.  To edit the Final Score, the assignment must not be marked graded. The score displayed in the Final Score cell will be the score reflected in the Gradebook and to the student (if allowed).

Percentage View (Default)

When the Percentage View is selected, the system will display:

  • Final Score % column with all values shown as percentages
  • Original Score % column with all values shown as percentages
  • Assignment Summary section will display:
    • Lowest score as a percentage
    • Highest score as a percentage
    • Total Possible % labeled in percentage format

Point View

When the Point View is selected, the system will display:

  • Final Score column with values shown as points
  • Original Score column with values shown as points
  • Assignment Summary section will display:
    • Lowest score as points
    • Highest score as points
    • Total Possible labeled in point format

This viewing option complements the Grade By Student and Grade By Question tabs, giving teachers flexibility in how they review and assess student work across the platform.

Assignment Comment

A "Note from Student" link to view the notes submitted by the student for the assignment.

The system saves the teacher's progress automatically. If the teacher navigates away from the summary page, they can seamlessly resume exactly where they left off when they return.

PDF Assignments in the Grade By Question tab

Assignments like PDF, URL etc that do not have questions will not be displayed in the “Grade By Question” tab.

Upon clicking on the Grade by Question tab of the PDF assignment a message will be displayed to the teacher stating, “There are no questions for this assignment. Please select the Grade by Student tab to view results.”

Since all questions in PDF types of assignments are teacher graded, teachers will need to travel to the Grade by Student tab to view student submissions.

PDF Assignments in the Grade By Student Tab

For PDF type of assignments teacher is required to click on the Grade by Student tab to grade the student submission.

While the Only Ungraded toggle is turned ON by default, teacher will be able to see the below message “This student has no ungraded questions”.  The  teacher will need to turn OFF the Only Ungraded toggle to see the students' work on the pdf (annotations).

On the top of the student submission, student names can be located along with the points scored. The < > arrows, next to the student's name allows teacher to navigate easily.

The Teacher will have to use the dropdown menu to select a specific student

If the teacher needs to change the scores, click on the pencil icon to elect a new status from the dropdown menu with options : Not Started, Submitted, Graded, Started.

In order to score the PDF assessment teacher can choose between Full Credit and No Credit which auto-populates the score on the basis of maximum scores of the assignment i.e out of 100 for PDFs.

To score the PDF Assignment for the next student, teachers will need to click <> next to the Student dropdown or click the student dropdown to select the student.
