Custom Content: How to Build a Custom Assessment

Learn how to build your own custom assessment using the My Content feature.

Teachers can combine pre-built questions from the Gallopade grade level course to create their own custom assessments using the My Content feature. 

+Create Assessment 

To start creating a new assessment select +Create Assessment button on the top right of the screen. 

 
 

Step 1: Assessment Information

Clicking on +Create Assessment button navigates the teacher to the Create Assessment screen. Step 1 allows teachers to key in the following details;

  • Assessment Title 
  • Assessment Sub-title
  • Select Course 
  • Assessment Leve (pre-populated)l 
  • Description 
  • Instructions for Students 

After entering your assessment details, select the blue Next button to go to Step 2.

 
 

Step 2: Finalize Questions

Step 2 allows teachers to add questions to the assessment. Teachers can add questions via question bank or by creating new questions.

Teachers will have to click on either of the below buttons:

  • Add From Question Bank Button – Insert additional questions
  • Create New Question Button – Build a new question directly in the assessment   

Adding Questions from +Add From Question Bank

To add questions from existing question banks, click the + Add From Question Bank button.

Clicking on the + Add From Question Bank button will display Add Questions to Assessment modal box. The teacher can make selections for  Gallopade / Custom / Shared questions by correlated standard or question type, using the filters on the left. The Teachers can select as many questions as required by clicking on the checkbox located on the left-side of the question thumbnail. 

Selecting questions will enable Add Questions button at the bottom left corner of the Add Questions Modal. 

After adding the questions, Success modal is displayed. The teacher will have to click on the X icon to close the modal and the teacher will return to the Step 2 with the added questions reflected.

The Finalize Questions step allows teachers to review, organize, and manage the questions included in an assessment before saving and publishing it. From this screen, teachers can adjust question order, review standards coverage, edit questions, or remove them as needed.

  1. Navigation Controls: 
  • Previous – Returns to the previous step (Assessment Information)
  • Save – Saves current information
  • Next – Moves to the final step (Summary/Save)

2. The summary panel provides a quick overview of the assessment contents:

  • Questions – Total number of questions included in the assessment.
  • Points – Total points assigned across all questions.
  • Standards Covered – Lists the standards aligned to the questions
    • If many standards are present, only the first few are displayed.
    • Selecting View Other Standards label expands the full list of standards.
  • Question Types – Displays the types of questions included (e.g., Multiple Choice, Open Response)

3. Each row represents a single question included in the assessment. The following columns are displayed:

  • Sequence – The position of the question in the assessment
    • Arrow buttons – Move a question up or down one position at a time
    • Drag and drop – Reposition questions by dragging them to a new location
  • Weight – The scoring weight assigned to the question
  • Percentage – The contribution of the question to the total score
  • Question – The question title and details including (Author, Type, Location, Standard and more)

The Teachers can also select: Distribute Weight evenly to 100 percent checkbox  – This automatically balances the percentage values across all questions.

4. Previewing a Question - Clicking the question title displays the question in preview mode. 

5. Editing a Question: There are 2 ways to Edit a question inside an assessment. 

Method 1: Selecting the Edit button on the top right of the question preview screen displays the Edit Question modal. 

Method 2:  The question can be edited by using the Edit Pencil icon. Clicking on the pencil icon displays the Edit Question modal. 

 

Clicking on the Continue button from the Edit Question modal, will navigate the teacher to Step 2 : Edit Question. The teacher is allowed to

  • Modify question text
  • Update answer choices
  • Adjust standards alignment
  • Change scoring settings

After editing and saving the changes, the teacher will return to the Step-2 Finalize Questions screen of the Assessment Creation process.

6. Remove Question - Click the X icon will delete the question from an assessment. 

Clicking the X icon opens the Delete Question modal. Selecting Yes permanently deletes the question from the assessment, while selecting No cancels the action and retains the question.

 
 

Create New Questions 

Refer to the article “How to create your own questions within the My Content Feature ” for step-by-step instructions on creating your own questions within the My Content feature.

After finalizing the questions, the teachers can click on the save button on the top right of the page to save the changes and click the Next button to navigate to Step 3 of assessment creation process. 

 
 

Step 3: Summary/ Save

Step 3 allows teachers to preview the entire test. This screen allows teachers to review key assessment details, set the assessment status, optionally share the assessment with collections, and choose how to save or assign the assessment.

Assessment Overview Header:

The Overview Header section displays key summary information about the assessment before it is saved or assigned.

  • Assessment Title / Sub-Title
    • Displays the name of the assessment being created or edited. Below the Title, Sub-title is reflected. 
  • Type
    • Indicates the assessment type (for example, Custom ExperTrack). This helps teachers confirm the format or source of the assessment.
  • Standards
    • Lists the academic standards aligned to the assessment. This allows teachers to verify that the assessment meets required instructional objectives.

Active Status:  Active status indicates that the assessment is ready to be used.

  • The assessment can be assigned to students
  • The assessment can be shared with collections
  • The assessment is considered finalized

Editing Status: Editing status indicates that the assessment is still in draft form.

  • The assessment cannot be assigned to students
  • The assessment cannot be shared with collections
  • The assessment remains available for further changes

Share to Collections:

When Active Collections are Available:

This section allows teachers to share the assessment with one or more existing collections. Teachers can review the available collections under My Collections, select the checkbox next to the desired collection(s), to share the assessment. If needed, teachers can also click Create Collection to create a new collection before adding the assessment.

When No Active Collections are Available:

This section allows teachers to share the assessment with one or more collections. If there are no pre-existing collections available to the teacher, an alert message will be displayed stating:
“You don’t have any active collections you can add this assessment to yet. Use Create Collection below to set one up, then you can add this assessment there"

 

Navigational Controls:

  • Save & Assign button:

Selecting Save & Assign completes the assessment setup and display Assign modal. Teachers can assign the Custom Assessment to any class. To Assign the custom assessment, status must be set to Active. 

  • Save & Exit button:

Selecting Save & Exit button saves the assessment and returns the teacher to the assessment list without assigning it. This allows the teacher to assign the custom assessment at a later time.
